Research Methodology

How we research, verify, and present information about Lord Muruga

Source Hierarchy

Sources are evaluated and weighted according to the following hierarchy:

Tier 1
Primary Scriptures

Original texts in Tamil (Kandha Puranam, Thirumurugatruppadai) and Sanskrit (Skanda Purana). These are the foundational sources whose authority is universally accepted within the tradition.

Tier 2
Secondary Literature

Devotional and philosophical works (Thiruppugazh, Kandar Anuboothi, Shaiva Siddhanta texts) that interpret, elaborate on, or derive from primary scriptures.

Tier 3
Official Records

Government and institutional records (HRCE temple data, ASI epigraphical reports, temple administration publications) that provide verifiable factual data.

Tier 4
Scholarly Secondary Sources

Academic monographs, peer-reviewed journal articles, and university press publications that analyze primary sources through modern scholarly methods.

Tier 5
Temple Traditions

Sthala puranas, oral traditions, and festival practices documented by temple authorities. These are presented as traditions rather than verifiable historical facts.

Verification Process

Every factual claim on LordMurugan.in undergoes a verification process:

  1. Source Identification: The original source of the claim is identified (which scripture, which chapter, which inscription, etc.).
  2. Cross-Reference: The claim is checked against at least one additional independent source where available.
  3. Language Verification: For scriptural claims, the original Tamil or Sanskrit text is consulted to ensure translation accuracy.
  4. Attribution: All sources used are listed with the article so readers can verify independently.

Areas of Active Research

The following aspects of Murugan studies are areas of ongoing research and scholarly debate. We note uncertainties where they exist:

  • The relationship between the Tamil Murugan of Sangam literature and the Sanskrit Skanda of the Puranic tradition
  • Chronological dating of early Murugan temples based on epigraphical evidence
  • Variations in the Arupadai Veedu list across different textual traditions
  • The historical evolution of the Soorasamharam narrative across Tamil and Sanskrit sources
