Significance
Bhairavi Kona, located in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh near the Odisha border, is one of the few prominent Murugan temples in eastern India, nestled in the dense forests of the Eastern Ghats. It is a testament to the spread of Murugan worship beyond Tamil Nadu and is revered by both Telugu and Tamil pilgrims. The temple is dedicated to both Bhairava (a fierce form of Shiva) and Murugan, making it a unique dual-shrine complex.
Architecture
The temple features a rare blend of Kalinga and Tamil Dravidian architectural styles, reflecting the cultural confluence of Odisha and Tamil Nadu. The main sanctum houses Murugan in a seated posture with Valli and Deivanai. The vimana is pyramidal in the classic Odishan Kalinga style, distinct from the stepped Dravidian vimana of Tamil temples, built with locally sourced sandstone. A separate Bhairava shrine and a Nataraja shrine are within the complex. The temple's location amidst rugged hills, seasonal waterfalls, and dense teak forests gives it a mystical atmosphere. The nearby Kona River and the Mahendragiri hills add to the scenic setting.
