Significance
Erumadam, located 7 km from Tiruvannamalai, is a hill Murugan temple perched at an elevation of approximately 300 meters, offering panoramic views of the sacred Arunachala Hill. It is a significant stop for pilgrims visiting the Annamalaiyar Temple, combining Murugan and Shiva worship in a single pilgrimage circuit. According to the Puranic legend, the hill resembles a buffalo (erumai) that was turned to stone by Lord Shiva, giving the site its name and spiritual significance.
Architecture
The temple is built on a small hill accessible by over 100 stone steps cut into the natural rock face. The sanctum is a simple yet elegant structure with a small vimana adorned with basic stucco work. The gopuram is modest, reflecting the temple's hilltop setting and rural character. The main idol of Murugan is in standing posture, carved from black granite. The temple prakaram offers unobstructed panoramic views of the sacred Arunachala Hill, especially captivating at sunrise when the first rays illuminate the mountain. Several natural rock formations and a small cave shrine dedicated to Vinayagar are found along the hillside.
