Significance
Srikalahasti is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams representing the element of wind (Vayu). While primarily a Shiva temple, the Murugan shrine within the complex is deeply revered. The temple is located in Andhra Pradesh, 36 km from Tirupati, and is a major pilgrimage destination in South India.
Architecture
The temple is built in the Dravidian style with two large gopurams the outer 11-tier Rajagopuram (36m) and the inner Gaali Gopuram (which has no roof, allowing wind to pass through, symbolizing the Vayu element). The Murugan shrine is located in the outer prakaram with a 6-foot idol. The 100-pillar mandapam has exquisite stone carvings. The sanctum houses the self-manifested Vayu Linga.
