Significance
The Sri Maha Sivan Temple in Semenyih houses a magnificent 7-meter Vel (sacred spear) and a revered Murugan shrine within its sprawling complex. Nestled against the scenic Broga Hills, the temple serves the vibrant Tamil community of Selangor and draws thousands of devotees from across the Klang Valley, just 35 km from Kuala Lumpur. The annual Thaipusam festival attracts over 10,000 pilgrims.
Architecture
The temple's gopuram is 5-tiered in the classic Dravidian style with vibrant stucco figures of deities and celestial beings. The main sanctum houses Lord Shiva (Sri Maha Sivan), while the Murugan shrine is located in the outer prakaram with a finely sculpted idol of Murugan with Valli and Deivanai. The 7-meter Vel, standing majestically in the temple courtyard, is crafted from reinforced concrete with a shimmering gold-painted surface and weighs several tonnes. The temple walls feature colorful mural paintings depicting scenes from the Skanda Purana, the marriage of Murugan, and the slaying of Surapadman.
