Significance
Vallakottai, near Chennai, is famous for its massive single-stone (monolithic) Murugan statue, carved from a single block of granite and standing approximately 15 feet tall, installed in 1976 alongside the towering 63-foot Vel (spear) that is visible from great distances. The temple is a modern pilgrimage destination known for its architectural grandeur and spiritual ambiance, drawing devotees from across Tamil Nadu.
Architecture
The temple complex is built in the Tamil Dravidian architectural style. The 5-tier gopuram is adorned with colorful stucco figures depicting episodes from the Skanda Purana. The main sanctum houses Muthukumaraswamy with Valli and Deivanai. The 63-foot Vel stands in a separate shrine, coated with gold leaf at the tip. The 1,000-pillar mandapam features intricate granite carvings. A 12-foot Hanuman statue guards the temple entrance.
