Significance
Tiruporur is a historic Murugan temple near Chennai, renowned for its seven sacred ponds (kollis) and the fascinating legend of Murugan disguising himself as Valli's devotee. The temple's name means 'holy place of war', referencing Murugan's battle with Surapadma at the nearby seashore, where the divine Vel was first wielded. It is one of the most important Murugan temples in the Chennai region.
Architecture
The temple complex features a 5-tier gopuram in the Dravidian style. The main sanctum houses Vallavaraiyan with Valli and Deivanai. The seven temple tanks (Kolli theerthams) Surya, Chandra, Angaraka, Budha, Guru, Sukra, and Sani are arranged around the temple. Each pond is believed to pacify the corresponding planet. The Nataraja Sabha (dance hall) has wooden carvings depicting the 108 Bharatanatyam poses.
