Significance
Kataragama is one of the most unique multi-faith pilgrimage sites in the world, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and indigenous Vedda people. The Maha Devale dedicated to Murugan is the central shrine. It represents the unity of diverse religious traditions in Sri Lanka.
Architecture
The Kataragama complex includes the Maha Devale (main Murugan shrine), the Buddhist Vihara, and the Mosque. The Devale is built in the Kandyan architectural style with a distinctive roof structure. The sanctum houses the Kataragama Deviyo in a small shrine. The golden pinnacle is visible from afar. The Menik Ganga (river) flows alongside the temple.
