Vaikasi Visakam is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Murugan. It falls on the full moon day of Tamil month Vaikasi when the Visakam star reigns. According to the Skanda Puranam, Murugan was born from six sparks from Shiva's third eye, nurtured by the Krithika goddesses in the Saravana Poigai.
