Significance
Palani is the third Arupadai Veedu and one of the richest Murugan temples in the world. Murugan is worshipped here as Dandayuthapani a renunciate holding a staff, embodying the ascetic form he assumed after a quarrel with his brother Ganesha over the divine fruit. The deity is made of Navabashanam (nine medicinal minerals).
Architecture
The temple is on a hilltop accessible by 60 stone steps (Padaikal Mandapam) or a winch/rope car. The main sanctum houses the Navabashanam idol of Dandayuthapani facing west. The gopuram is 7-tiered with colorful stucco work. The Arunthavar (Murugan) shrine has a gold-plated vimana. The Palani Andavar temple complex includes the Periyanayaki Amman shrine, Subrahmanya mandapam, and the temple tank called Sivagiri Theertham.
