Significance

Thiruparankundram is revered as the first among the six abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan. It is here that Murugan married Deivanai, the daughter of Indra, after vanquishing the demon Surapadman. The temple is carved into a rocky hill and is one of the most ancient Murugan sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu.

Architecture

The temple is a marvel of Pandya rock-cut architecture with a 6th-century cave shrine hewn from solid granite. The main sanctum faces east and features a stunning vimana with Nayak-era stucco figures. A 16-pillared mandapam leads to the inner sanctum, with sculpted pillars depicting scenes from the Skanda Purana. The Ardha Mandapam has ornate pilasters and lotus medallions. The temple tank, Saravana Poigai, is located on the hill.
