Significance

Marudamalai, located on a hill 12 km from Coimbatore, is a 1,200-year-old Murugan temple revered for its unique iconography of Murugan riding a horse. The temple is a major pilgrimage site for devotees from western Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Architecture

The temple is built on a hill accessible by 200+ steps. The main gopuram is 5-tiered in Dravidian style with striking stucco figures. The sanctum houses Murugan on a horse (Vahana) with Valli and Deivanai. A separate shrine for Vinayagar is carved into a rock face. The temple prakaram offers panoramic views of Coimbatore city and the Western Ghats. The Navagraha shrine is uniquely placed on the hilltop.
